Type of mouth bacteria ‘melts’ some cancers, study finds

Researchers from Guy’s and St Thomas’ and King’s College London have discovered a surprising potential for a common mouth bacterium, Fusobacterium, to combat certain cancers. This bacterium, typically found in the mouth, appears to have a remarkable ability to "melt" cancer cells, particularly in head and neck cancers. In laboratory studies, Fusobacterium was found to kill up to 99% of these cancer cells, significantly reducing the number of viable cancer cells within days.

The scientists were initially taken aback by these findings, as Fusobacterium has previously been associated with the progression of other cancers, such as colorectal cancer. The discovery could open new avenues for cancer treatment, especially since patients with head and neck cancers who had this bacterium within their tumors experienced much better outcomes (Ground News) (TROMnews) (Democratic Underground). Further research is underway to understand the mechanisms behind this effect, with hopes of developing new therapeutic strategies.
